Dr. Sherry Kostman Cater
Intro
My name is Dr. Sherry Kostman Cater, and I am a licensed clinical psychologist, Doctor of Psychology, and Certified Case Manager with more than 20 years of experience. I enjoy helping adults and older adults navigate life’s transitions, including retirement, health changes, grief, loss of independence, and changing family relationships. I value providing compassionate, meaningful support during these important stages of life.
How would you describe your approach to care?
My approach to care is collaborative, person-centered, and rooted in Adlerian principles of encouragement, belonging, social interest, and respect for each person's life story. I also draw from logotherapy, helping clients identify meaning, purpose, and sources of hope during transitions such as retirement, grief, illness, isolation, or loss of independence. My goal is to help adults and older adults feel valued, connected, resilient, and able to move forward with dignity and self-understanding during meaningful change.
What should be expected in the first session?
In the first session, clients can expect a warm, respectful, and collaborative conversation focused on getting to know them as a whole person. I ask about current concerns, life history, health, relationships, strengths, coping style, and what they hope to gain from therapy. I also explain confidentiality, answer questions, and begin identifying meaningful goals. My priority is helping clients feel comfortable, understood, and supported as we begin building a therapeutic relationship.
