Dr. Jeffrey Gernert
Intro
I’m Dr. Jeffrey J. Gernert, a licensed clinical psychologist with a Ph.D. from George Washington University and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania (Penn). With over two decades of clinical experience, I’m dedicated to creating a space where clients feel truly seen, supported, and understood.
Having practiced extensively in Washington, D.C., I understand the unique pressures and expectations that come with high-achievement academic and professional environments. This helps me connect especially well with clients who value wisdom, genuineness, and personal growth.
My practice is welcoming and affirming to individuals of all identities, including both the straight and LGBTQ+ communities.
How would you describe your approach to care?
My practice combines psychodynamic therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness, and supportive counseling. I tailor these approaches to best meet the unique needs of each client.
What should be expected in the first session?
What to expect depends on you and your reasons for seeking treatment. I generally like to begin by hearing more about what brings you in. If you’re experiencing something urgent, we’ll focus on that right away and save some of the bureaucratic stuff for our next session. If your situation isn’t urgent, we’ll spend some time discussing psychotherapy itself, potential risks and benefits, confidentiality, and reviewing any previous treatment experiences—what has helped and what hasn’t. This helps me tailor an approach that supports you effectively.
