Annette Rios-Barrera
Intro
I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker based in Texas with 23 years of experience supporting older adults and their families. My pronouns are she/her. My work centers on helping adults 65 and older navigate the emotional, physical, and relational changes that can arise with aging. Families often reach out when they notice shifts in mood, memory, independence, or communication, and they are looking for a therapist who can provide steady, compassionate, and clinically informed support.
How would you describe your approach to care?
My approach is grounded in trauma-informed care and relational healing. I focus on emotional safety, clarity, and connection while integrating evidence-based practices that support coping, resilience, and improved quality of life. I work with clients from all backgrounds, including LGBTQ+ individuals and those in polyamorous or ethically non-monogamous relationships. I also incorporate mindfulness and gentle humor when appropriate, drawing on my training as a certified laughter yoga instructor to support stress reduction and emotional well-being.
What should be expected in the first session?
In our first session, I take time to understand your parent’s history, current concerns, strengths, and goals. We move at a pace that feels comfortable, ensuring they feel heard, respected, and never rushed. I provide space for both the client and family to share observations and priorities, while maintaining the client’s autonomy and dignity. By the end of the session, we will identify initial focus areas and discuss a plan for ongoing support that is tailored to their needs.
